Question:
Is it permissible to say ‘as-Salaamu Alaikum’ to a Muslim woman without looking at her and speaking with her?1

Answer:
It is permissible (provided) you are safe from seduction. And an-Nabee sallallaahu alaihi wasallam- used to give the greeting to women. And it is possible that he speaks (to her) with his hand (hand gesture) - so therefore it is no problem if you says (to her) ‘as-Salaamu Alaikum’ and she says (to you) ‘wa alaykumus salaam’. There is nothing that prevents this (greeting) and (with this) Allaah says: “But speak (to them) in an honorable manner”. [Surah al- Ahzaab 33:32]
